The Potted Hen

Pre-theatre or practically any other time of the day, the Potted Hen is in a centre for arts and craic.  With it being one of the first sights you see in Saint Anne’s Square, you know that you’ve reached a pivotal point in Belfast’s dining scene.  Within Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter you have your pick for places to go before and after visiting the Potted Hen.

But let’s talk about the restaurant itself….

If we start with the fact that it’s recently been labelled ‘The Best Restaurant in Northern Ireland’ by the National Restaurant Awards London, then there doesn’t need to be much more to say.

Opened in 2010, it was the first restaurant to open in the Square.  One could argue that it’s the Mac theatre and arts complex that opened to facilitate the Potted Hen.  The Hen’s hearts are set in the right place.  With a passion for fresh ingredients in order to help create inventive dishes that can surprise and delight their guests, they also had to throw in the friendly service to round up the experience.

The surrounding decor employs the theory that ‘less is more’.  But not stamping anything and everything, they have a spacious setting with plain wooden furniture and a grey floor that helps mimic the outside cobblestone ground.  In the end the Potted Hen want their produce to do the work.  By taking away many distractions, it’s the meal you have come for and the meal will have your attention.

And when the summer months slide in, you too can slide into the outside dining area enjoying the gentle breeze and that glass of cool white wine or cocktail while you enjoy the food they let do the talking.
